Mmmmmm. Meme-ey. [Nov. 10th, 2009|07:13 am]
• Anyone who looks at this entry has to post this meme and their current wallpaper on their LJ.
• Explain in five sentences why you're using that wallpaper
• Don't change your wallpaper before doing this! The point is to see what you had on!

This is a photo I took of Tina when we were at Earwax in Wicker Park. Nearly everyone who sees it immediately identifies either the restaurant or the neighborhood. I'm guessing the little slice of American Apparel gives it away. Earwax is a tasty place, if you ever get a chance to eat there. I recommend it.

black. (by urline)

Ever since I saw this picture, I've wanted a decent flat black road bike. No ugly stickers with stupid bike brand logos, no shiny colors. Just the clean, black form of the bike. It's almost typographic in its beauty, and that gives me a total design boner.

Right now, I've got this red bike with knobby tires that is some kind of pansy mountain bike thing. So it's not great on the road, and it would probably explode upon contact with any mountainous surface. My mom's got a nice road bike with thin slick tires, and I think I might steal it. If it's ok with her, I might paint it flat black this summer. The idea of a project like that makes me happy. Does anyone know much about painting bikes? All I know is what I've read on the internets today.

It's a little weird riding a girl's bike, but I don't think that will be too big a thing for me to get over. Ideally, I would like a single speed bike, because I think that would be easier to learn how to fix in the future. My long-term goal is to get rid of my car and move somewhere with great public transportation, and I think becoming a "bike person" would be a good thing to invest my time into. Any advice on getting started (good books to read?) would be appreciated.

Interview with Eric Michaud, President of Pumping Station: One [Feb. 19th, 2009|07:27 pm]

Preview of HELLO - Eric Michaud, President of Pumping Station: One from Dave Jacob Hoffman on Vimeo.

Hey! I did this interview with this guy named Eric Michaud about hackerspaces. You can watch the preview above, or you can watch the full interview on my blog.

If you went there and left some comments, and maybe sent it around to people who you think would be interested, that would be awesome. I'd really like for this video to get around on the internets, since I put a lot of work into it.

Thanks, guys!

jumpy [Feb. 17th, 2009|02:14 pm]

I just got the Korg DS-10, which is a "game" that turns your nintendo DS into a synthesizer. I thought I would share my first little creation, and jump around like an ass too. Enjoy, internets.

Tonight You Belong to Me (ukulele cover) [Jan. 7th, 2009|09:08 am]

Watch this video on YouTube or Vimeo.

This was my first shot at playing along with myself on video. I was so impressed by this young lad's performance that I had to try it for myself. The logistics are a little tricky to figure out, so I kept it pretty simple with this one, but I'll probably try some more daring videos like this in the future.

the worst [Dec. 26th, 2008|08:00 pm]
I had a terrible day.

Eric woke me up and said I was supposed to open, so I got all confused and hurried out the door without breakfast, and my car wouldn't go up this icy hill, so i had to find another route and I was way late, and then it turns out I wasn't even on the schedule to open and somebody else had already done it when I got there and I was early instead of late.

Then at 4:30, I picked up dinner for everyone, and it was super foggy, and I went through this parking lot I normally go through, except it wasn't plowed (which I couldn't see until I was in in thanks to the fog), and I was doing ok until I got stuck in the tracks of a truck that had done donuts in the snow, so jay and gary and some strangers came and helped me get it out, and now my car is making a weird clunky noise when it's stopped.

And Tina is gone to visit relatives, so I have no Tina here for me. Only a bottle of really awesome Hunter S. Thompson beer. But that is not a Tina.

Bad day.

Tina's little nephew lives far away, so we've devised a series of short movies to entertain and educate him. So here you have it: Warrencast episode 1, featuring original songs made up on the spot.

Stay tuned to Dave Makes dot com for more of these.

10,000 hours [Nov. 16th, 2008|09:35 am]
Here's an chunk of the new Malcolm Gladwell book that I found to be very interesting. It's about how you need 10,000 hours of practice to be a genius at something. I always hated practicing, but if Malcolm says I have to, and this guy says I have to, I'm pretty convinced.
